WCED@Home Learning - Pilot Team

The WCED@Home Learning Pilot Team includes members from the Curriculum Management, Head Office, Districts, After School Programme, and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, non-governmental organisations, higher education institutions, unions, principals’ forum and learner representatives.  The Western Cape Government has run an effective, award-winning transversal After School Programme for several years, with the aim of having at least 112 000 learners regularly attend these programmes to improve learning, school outcomes, school retention and matric results.  @home learning resources were developed, resulting in “The Treasure Box”. 110 000 copies were distributed in the province, involving 125 organisations and over 900 schools. Available in five South African languages, materials were also distributed to other provinces. 2 500 young children not actively involved in learning, have become enthusiastically involved in regular learning activities, 59 interns have benefitted from a thorough skills’ development programme, and schools and the district offices are seeing their future roles more creatively in terms of supporting @home learning. Caregivers and parents are also motivated to play a more involved role in learner support.
