Red Dot Taxi
The Red Dot Project was implemented by the Department of Transport and Public Works in collaboration with the Department of Health, to provide dedicated transport services during our fight against COVID-19. The Project was launched in May 2020 providing two distinct services: Red Dot Q&I to transport citizens who have tested positive for COVID-19, or identified as high-risk due to exposure, to and from public quarantine and isolation facilities, and Red Dot Lite to transport health care workers from government healthcare facilities in the Cape Metro Region when public transport was limited. The Project was implemented through an innovative partnership with the Western Cape minibus taxi industry. A first of its kind, the Western Cape Branch of the South African National Taxi Council formed a private company called Umanyano Travel Service and they provided the service under contract. As at 30 November 2020, over 158 500 health care workers were transported on the Red Dot Lite service and over 13 000 patients were transported to and from Q&I facilities.
