He joined the Western Cape Government in 2001, during which time he has had opportunities to focus on his professional passions, including public transport, project management, road safety, technology and systems. In 2014, he and his team received the Service Excellence Gold Award for the Best Implemented Project, for the Safely Home (road safety) Programme, which they initiated, and which is still going strong. Yasir heads up the Government Motor Transport Trading Entity in the Western Cape Mobility Department, where he has been playing an instrumental role in the development and roll out of the Western Cape Government’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, which not only paves the way for the Western Cape’s fleet to transition from internal combustion engine vehicle to electric and new energy vehicles, but also lays the foundation for collaboration between government, private sector and academia to create an ecosystem for new energy vehicles in South Africa. He takes pride in being a supportive leader, who enjoys building strong teams, and introducing systems and technology for working smarter in order to better serve the trading entity’s clients and the citizens of the Western Cape.
